Nicolas Cage has revealed the idea for 'Sorcerer's Apprentice' really came together when he bumped into former schoolmate Jon Turtletaub - who is also director of the 'National Treasure' franchise - at a school play.

Nicolas Cage found a director for his new film at a school play.

The actor - who plays a master sorcerer in modern-day Manhattan in his new movie 'Sorcerer's Apprentice' - wanted former schoolmate Jon Turtletaub to direct the movie, but the idea really came together when they bumped into each other at a production Nicolas' son was in.

He explained: "A little of the magic of it is that when the idea was developed and created to do 'Sorcerer's Apprentice', I wanted Jon to direct the movie. There was a play happening at Beverly Hills High School, and my son was in it, and so there we were, in the old seats, and the old drama department, in the theatre, watching this 'Inherit the Wind' production, which was good as well, and then we're talking about doing 'Sorcerer's Apprentice' together, so it came full circle.

"The whole movie has been like that, has had that magical quality, which is amazing since the movie is about magic."

The 42-year-old actor - who has already appeared in a number of films directed by his former schoolmate - admitted he feels "the gods were with him" when he starred in 'Sorcerer's Apprentice'.

He added to Movies Online: "I just want to make a good movie. I really felt the movie gods were with us on this one, specifically Walt Disney. I think he would have been happy with this. I was just having faith in that."
