I found this in my google alerts this morning, it's about the castle

Cage Crowned King Of The Castle

Ready the battlements, Nicolas Cage is coming to Bath

Castle MidfordMaybe its the incessant craving for a life out of the paparazzi's watchful glare that has Nicolas Cage reaching for his cheque book every time he comes across a fortified homestead complete with crenellations.

After all, if it's privacy you're after, why not get it in traditional eighteenth-century style, with turrets and ramparts and all that other castle stuff they only get in Disney-form stateside.

Evidently Cage has had enough of living in his castle-inspired Californian palace and has realised that nothing quite beats the real thing, hence his recent acquisition of the £5 million-pound gothic pile known as Midford Castle.

The castle, which was being marketed by Humberts, Chippenham, is situated just three miles from Bath and sits in 60 acres of secluded park and woodland - undoubtedly a big draw for the press-shy Oscar winner.

In addition to a picturebook landscape, the castle boasts seven bedrooms, two cottages, an orangery, a former priory and those all-important authentic castle features.

And as if it needed another talking point, the aerial view of the castle reveals that the place is shaped like the ace of clubs - supposedly as a nod by Henry Disney Roebuck to the card which won him the fortune to build it back in 1775.

From Bavaria To Bath

Nicolas CageThis isn't the first fortress the movie star has set his sights on.

Something of a property mogul with a reported 14 dwellings to his name, the castle-crazy Cage purchased the older and more dilapidated Bavarian bastion Castle Neidstein as recently as last year.

But purists need not worry about any Hollywood makeovers to their historical strongholds any time soon.

Although Cage once said he'd like to move a European castle brick by brick across the pond, he has no such plans for the Grade I listed Midford Castle.

As with his Germanic purchase, the actor intends to restore it to its former glory after he takes possession in late August.

If this has you dreaming of a regal home in the country and who could blame you? don't despair: there are still plenty of places for sale that bring to mind ladies with very long hair, fire-breathing dragons, and knights in shining armour doing cool stuff with broad swords.

Here are a few:

news on the castle....

For sale: Midford Castle, Somerset

This romantic castle has just come onto the market, and is being billed as the biggest estate sale to come up in Somerset so far this year.

Thursday, 05 April 2007

Penny Churchill

Some say that the unusual triangular shape of romantic Midford Castle, which dominates the village and valley of Midford, three miles from Bath, represents the Ace of Clubsa reference to a fortune winning card allegedly played at the gaming tables by Henry Disney Roebuck, who built the castle in 1775. This theory was discounted in Country Life (March 3 and 10, 1944) by Christopher Hussey, who suggested instead that Mr Roebuck was 'a wealthy romantic (who) chose the plan and design of the building chiefly for aesthetic reasons', based on contemporary plans by John Carter, a Gothic enthusiast who worked with James Wyatt, and was on friendly terms with Horace Walpole.

Whatever the origins of Midford Castle, now listed Grade I, its subsequent history is full of romantic twists and turns. In 1810, the castle was bought by one of the Conollys of Castletown in Co Kildare, who added the porch (said to give the Ace of Clubs its stalk) and built the nearby stables and chapel. The latter fell into disrepair after the last of the Conollys sold the house in 1901, since when the present owners, Mr and Mrs Michael Briggs, who bought Midford in 1961, have incorporated the chapel into the garden as a picturesque ruin.

During their 45 nyear tenure, Michael and Isabel Briggs have patiently restored and improved the castle, buying back its various dependencies as they became available, and adding much of the surrounding 59 acres of parkland, grassland and woodland to create this picturesque country estate on the outskirts of Georgian Bath.

'The castle is nowhere near as big as it looks,' says Mrs Briggs, for whom the renovation project of half a lifetime has been 'a tremendous pleasure'. Yet, not only has this remarkable lady brought up three children while overseeing the renaissance of Midford, she has also produced a steady flow of bestsellers, as Isabel Colegate, including The Shooting Party, the 'Orlando' trilogy, The Summer of the Royal Visit, and most recently, Winter Journey. Her husband, Michael, has been no less involved, both at Midford and locally, as the long standing chairman of Bath Preservation Trust.

But now it is time to move on, and the Midford Castle estate is for sale through Humberts (01249 444555) at a guide price of £5 million. 'This is Somerset's biggest estate sale of the year so far, and not just in terms of price, but for the uniqueness of Midford's setting, its extraordinary collection of historic buildings (the main three storey house has seven bedrooms and three reception rooms) and its accessibility from London by road, rail and air,' says Christopher Jerram of Humberts.

RE: ANOTHER castle!

I'm amazed I was so calm but I expect that was shock! Lol.

When we'd said our goodbyes and he blew me a kiss and said ''I love you too'' he went in to Lancaster House and I just turned and walked off into the park and burst into floods of tears.
I just sobbed my heart out!
I think he could see I was feeling emotional the way he was looking at me but I held it all in as there was no way I was going to let him see me cry!biggrinwink

You were far more 'centered' than I would ever be if I saw Nic walking towards me at this point.   I probably would start blithering like an idiot or burst into hysterical tears or have some other quite attractive reaction.   He'd end up stopping dead in his tracks and go running the other way, I'm sure!  LOL!

Highly unlikely.  I mean, at this point, he have to pick up the phone or arrive on my doorstep....and um....remember the conversation we just had about the men in the white coats???   Well.....um....if I believed THAT would happen, it would be a sure ticket to the loon house for me....

Heck.....there were 2 or 3 more 'near misses' while in Chicago.  Which....btw....were not planned at all.   Just people telling me while I was downtown that they saw Nic Cage the day or night before sorta thing.

I'm telling you.....the cosmos.....has a nasty sense of humor.

It's truly sad to say this....but I am one of the fans who HAS given up.

Four or five near meetings was enough to make me give up.  I mean, when you're standing literally four feet away from him or he literally pulls his car right in front of your and looks at you or you're sitting in the Jay Leno show and he looks smack at the girl sitting next to you and waves at her (that's what she swears) or he walks directly behind you at 2o'clock in the morning and stands in front of your car and you can't open the damn door on the car....well....then....you simply GIVE UP.

The cosmos....it seems,  has a nasty sense of humor to it....where I'm concerned.
